Sports Massage
Sports Massage - Prepares an athlete for an upcoming event and aids in the
body's regenerative and restorative capacities following a rigorous workout or
competition. It stipulates the circulation of the blood and lymph. It also
breaks down lesions and adhesions and helps reduce fatigue.
|
Athletic massage enables athletes to attain their highest potential by
accelerating the body's natural restorative processes, enabling the athlete to
participate more often in rigorous physical training and conditioning. Massage
helps to reduce the chance of injury by identifying and eliminating conditions
in the soft tissue that are at potential risk of injury. When injury has
occurred, massage helps to restore mobility and flexibility to injured muscle
tissue, while reducing recovery time. Athletic massage can improve the athlete's
ability to perform while reducing the incidence of lost time due to injury and
fatigue. Regular athletic massage may extend the athletes career.
Athletic massage is not reserved just for the highly competitive athlete. The
same techniques are effective on any active individual for assessing and working
on soft tissue conditions.
Sports Massage is
defined as the systematic manipulation of the
soft tissue of the body. The movements of gliding, compressing,
stretching, percussing, and vibrating are regulated to produce
specific responses in the athlete. Historically, wherever sports have
been taken seriously, massage has been used in some form.
Today sports massage is gaining popularity.
Sports massage has
mechanical, physiological, and psychological responses.
Mechanical
responses occur as a result of the pressures and movements of the
hand on the body.
These actions stimulate venous and lymphatic drainage and mildly
stretch superficial and scar tissue. With friction massage connective
tissue can be effectively stretched, helping prevent rigidity in scar
formation. By the use of certain massage techniques; an athlete
inactive due to injury or swelling surrounding a joint, stagnation of
circulation may be prevented.
In physiological
responses, sports massage is known to increase circulation and as
a result increase metabolism to the musculature and aid in the removal
of metabolites such as lactic acid, resulting in the offsetting of
muscle soreness and fatigue. It also assists in offsetting venostasis
and edema by increasing circulation at and around the injury site, as
well contributing in the normal venous blood return to the heart.
The benefits derived
by the athlete are predominantly psychological. He or she feels
invigorated after intense manipulation of the tissue.
