The history of Qigong (Ch'i Kung) commences beyond the era of
written records, in the mists of prehistory. Earliest estimates
suggest that self enhancement and empowerment practices date into
the time of Chinese shamans, previous to 500 BCE. While Qigong has
strong roots into mystical and philosophical ground, the practical
healing and stress management applications are the most popular
aspects of the tradition in China today. Both the health and
spiritual applications are rapidly gaining in popularity in the
Western world as people realize that disease and stress are
relieved by peace of mind. Qigong is one of the four pillars of
traditional Chinese medicine: Acupuncture, Massage, Herbal
Medicines and Qigong. Of these, Qigong is the one that can be most
easily self initiated. Both massage and herbal remedies can also
be done as self care, however, Qigong is the mother of Chinese
self healing. Patients who use Qigong faithfully need less
medication, less acupuncture and heal faster. The word Qigong
breaks into Qi and Gong: Qi = vitality, energy, life force, Gong =
practice, cultivate, refine; Qigong = to cultivate and refine
through practice one's vitality or life force. The Chinese believe
that the primary mechanism that is triggered by the practice of
Qigong is a spontaneous balancing and enhancing of the natural
healing resources in the human system. Over thousands of years
millions of people have benefited from these practices believing
that improving the function of the Qi maintains health and heals
disease. In the paradigm of mechanistic Western science, the
practice of Qigong triggers a wide array of physiological
mechanisms which have profound healing benefits. It increases the
delivery of oxygen to the tissues. It enhances the elimination of
waste products as well as the transportation of immune cells
through the lymph system. And it shifts the chemistry of the brain
and the nervous system. You can find a summary of the many
physiological mechanisms that are initiated by the practice of
Qigong in the Information Center. There are various estimates for
the number of varieties of Qigong. There are at least a thousand.
Some elaborate and complex, some mysterious and esoteric and some
simple and practical. If you adjust to a relaxed, upright posture,
take a deep breath and relax your mind - you are already doing
Qigong. Try this: sit up, relax your body, take a deep breath,
rest your mind for just a moment. Already you are stimulating an
automatic self healing response. On any morning in the parks
throughout China you will find literally thousands of people doing
Qigong practices. Some practice individually quietly among the
trees. Others practice in large groups of hundreds or even
thousands. Often, one will see a patient, in hospital pajamas,
doing a special form of cancer recovery Qigong - ta form of slow
and intentful walking. Or a group might stand in a circle chatting
as they do a simple form based on hand movements. Qigong is one of
the most powerful self healing traditions ever developed in human
history. It is literally a health wonder of the world. Every time
you return to this Qigong and Taiji Resource Center you will find
that our libraries are growing. You may wish to explore the words
that are used to describe Qigong (Ch'i Kung) and Taiji (T'ai Chi),
it will help to clarify a few important points

Wing Choon Kung Fu is an
ancient form of Orthodox Shaolin Boxing based on Chinese-Taoists
philosophy and said to be designed by a Shaolin Abbess, Ng Moy, over 400
years ago. The story was that she taught the art to Yim Wing Chun who
does not have great skills, but had difficulty with opponents who are
mainly men who wanted to become her suitor. Yim Wing Chun further
developed the system that uses the strength of opponents against
themselves. The art was propagated down till today by Yim Wing Chun. But
this story could not be verified by historian of its accuracy.
Whether the story is true or not, the good thing is that the art,
developed more than 400 years ago is applicable to the young, the old
and the weak or strong. Since it does not rely entirely on physical
strength, Wing Choon Kung Fu is ideal for men and women of any stature.
Wing Choon Kung Fu is a simple, quiet and gentle martial art well suited
to the needs of people in modern society. Wing Choon training allows a
state of mental and physical excellence and is an amazingly effective
system in which one can become competent in a relatively short time.
Wing Choon Kung Fu had been preserved and passed down through
generations with its authentic principles and minor improvement through
a series of Grandmasters. In recent times, the more famous master of the
Wing Choon system being the late Yip Man from Hong Kong. He was the
master of the famous late Bruce Lee. This art serves as the base for
Bruce Lee’s martial art of Jeet Kune Do. Wing Choon is a martial art
system, which uses the most economic movements to achieve maximum
results. Therefore it is a simple, results-oriented system that has
become known for its efficiency and effectiveness. The course will
contain the following “free-hand” sets or forms : Sai Fa (Little Flower
Set) Tai Fa (Big Flower Set) Chi Sa In between having Energistic &
attributes exercises II Beginning students start off by learning the
various stances used in all the form. In the first form - Sai Fa, the
student will learn the concept of the centerline, body alignment and the
basic hand positions of Wing Choon. By practicing Sai Fa, the student
will also begin to develop their understanding of Wing Choon concepts,
as well as developing their stance, and learning the importance of
relaxation. All of this is essential before the student can move on to
learn Tai Fa and Chi Sao. In between learning the forms, a Wing Choon
student will learn numerous exercises, which are geared toward
developing their coordination, timing, sensitivity, balance, and
understanding of energistics. They also serve to further enhance the
student's understanding of Wing Choon concepts. To complement the above,
there will be exercises on : Pak Sao Lap Sao Dan Chi Sao Chi Sao There
will be self-defence application being taught as the course progresses.
The course offers adult classes for men and women with a wide variety of
training programs to suit the desires and goals of each student Every
student is taught as an individual with regard to their degree of
knowledge, natural ability, personal habits, and interests. Personalized
instruction via making each student’s progress dependent on his own
habits and willingness to succeed. Most martial arts are practiced as
sports, and students of these arts are required to demonstrate their
fighting abilities in competition. Wing Choon, on the other hand, is not
a sport, and students are not expected to compete in tournaments.
Summary Wing Choon Kungfu is sometimes regarded as a "soft" art,
although many of its techniques and force can be very hard. One should
bear in mind that here "soft", or "rou" in Chinese, is different from
what many westerners would conceptualize soft is. "Soft" in kungfu
context can be very forceful; its main characteristics are that the
exponent exploits the opponent's strength, and that brute strength is
not necessary. He who excels as a warrior does not appear formidable.
One who excels in fighting is never aroused in anger. One who excels in
defeating his enemy does not join issues. One who excels in employing
others humbles himself before them. This is the virtue of non-contention
and matching the sublimity of heaven -Lau Tzu Instructor’s Profile Mr.
Chang High Peng aged 35 is currently an instructor of Wing Choon in
Paramount Garden, Petaling Jaya (private classes). Mr. Chang has been a
staunch follower of Wing Choon's philosophy, having been involved in
this Chinese martial art for the last 7 years. Rising from rank and file
from a normal practitioner to instructor level, he is assisting the head
instructor in conducting the private classes in Petaling Jaya. Mr. Chang
has also been active in the Persatuan Tinju Wing Choon for 3 years,
Committee Member to the position of Treasurer.
