Southern Cross Herbal School
Established
in the late 1970s, this college majors in the teaching of Medical
Herbalism in its many aspects, as well as the ancillary basic sciences
needed for diagnosing and prescribing. However, other naturopathic
modalities such as iridology, mineral therapy and homoeopathy are also
taught by the school.
The
Diploma in Medical Herbalism course (ATMS Acc) conducted by the school is
famous for its emphasis on field work and the manufacture of herbal
medicines. Also offered is the Diploma in Iridology (ATMS Acc).
Denis
Stewart, Director and Senior Lecturer, is an experienced practitioner and
a recognised expert on matters pertaining to herbal medicine and
naturopathy generally.
All
courses conducted by the school emphasise a scientific approach, albeit
having regard for the traditional or historical background behind many
traditional medicine disciplines. Mr Stewart conducts the bulk of the
teaching in the Diploma of Medical Herbalism course, giving the course the
unique advantage of being based on his seventeen years of specialist
herbal medicine practice and teaching.
The
school conducts its courses primarily on a part-time, weekend seminar
basis which requires students to usually attend lectures at Gosford, on
the Central Coast of New South Wales, 50 miles north of Sydney and 50
miles south of Newcastle on the inter-urban rail network, approximately
one weekend per month. However, external tuition is offered to students
who are unable to undertake the part-time, weekend seminar style of
tuition. Some compulsory attendance for occasional important practical
sessions is still required from external students.
Denis
Stewart, B.A., N.D., D.B.M., Executive Council member of the ATMS,
also conducts herbal medicine practices in Gosford on (02) 4324 3352, and
New Lambton (02) 4956 2321.
Major
teaching venue is the Ourimbah Campus of the
University of Newcastle, on the Central Coast.
