Gastritis Synonyms : Clinical features, Diagnosis, Management, Prognosis, Clinical features: < BACK TO TOP > Acute Gastritis Acute gastritis is an acute mucosal inflammatory process, usually of a transient nature. The inflammation may be accompanied by haemorrhage into the mucosa and, in more severe circumstances, by sloughing of the superficial mucosal epithelium (erosion). This severe erosive form of the disease is an important cause of acute gastrointestinal bleeding. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and poorly understood, but acute gastritis is frequently associated with the following:
There is a spectrum of severity ranging from localised superficial lesions to diffuse erosions accompanied by bleeding (acute haemorrhagic gastritis).
