Headaches Synonyms : Clinical features, Diagnosis, Management, Prognosis, Clinical features: < BACK TO TOP > Headache (cephalalgia) is one of the most common and difficult clinical problems in medicine. In the majority of patients, the cause is trivial and reversible and a careful clinical history and examination often allows the diagnosis to be made, thus avoiding unnecessary investigations. Headache can be classified into:
Headache may originate from structures sensitive to pain such as extracranial tissues, intracranial blood vessels (arteries, veins, venous sinuses), dura, cranial nerves V (trigeminal), IX (glossopharyngeal), X (vagal) and cervical nerves 1-3. The exact stimulation that leads to pain may be meningeal irritation, increased intracranial pressure, displacement, traction and stretching of blood vessels, compression, traction and inflammation of the listed nerves and trauma, spasm and inflammation of cranial and cervical muscles.
