Synonyms : Clinical features, Diagnosis, Management, Prognosis, Clinical features: < BACK TO TOP > Tension Headache Tension headache is the commonest from of headache. The pain is mild to moderate in severity, bilateral, usually constant and may be generalised or predominantly nuchal (back of the neck). It is described as dull, tight, or like pressure, and there may be a sensation of a band round the head. Local tenderness may be present over the skull vault or in the occiput. The pain commonly lasts 30 min to few days, or even longer without interruption. In contrast to migraine, there is no associated nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light or sound. The patient can usually continue normal activities, and the pain tends to be less severe when the patient is occupied. Stress, anxiety and sleep dysfunction are common precipitants and there is sometimes an underlying depressive illness. Anxiety about the headache itself may lead to continued propagation of symptoms. A detailed history followed by a meticulous examination must be done to exclude organic causes. A careful explanation of the symptoms and likely precipitants are more beneficial than analgesics; rest, relaxation and massage often help. In few cases underlying stress is very difficult to treat and resulting headache sometimes is very persistent. Diagnosis: < BACK TO TOP >
